Introduction
The Covid-19 pandemic changed life for everyone — but for charities supporting vulnerable families, the impact was profound. For Ieuan The Lion Memorial Fund, Covid forced a necessary pause in our work, bringing uncertainty, difficult decisions, and time for reflection.
This post marks Day One of our rebuild. It explains what happened, why the charity stepped back, and how we are now moving forward with renewed focus and purpose.
When the World Stopped
Before the pandemic, the charity existed to give families of terminally ill children access to a fully adapted holiday home in Tenby — a safe place to rest, reconnect, and create precious memories away from hospital environments.
When Covid hit, those stays became unsafe overnight.
Lockdowns, travel restrictions, and serious health risks meant families could no longer use shared accommodation. At the same time, fundraising events were cancelled, community activity slowed, and many charities across the UK faced financial and operational pressure.
For us, continuing as normal was not an option. Family safety had to come first.
The Impact on the Charity
Covid affected every part of the charity’s operation:
- Families were unable to safely travel
- Fundraising opportunities disappeared
- Planning became uncertain and unpredictable
- Volunteers and supporters faced their own challenges
Rather than pushing forward unsafely, the charity made the difficult decision to pause. This was not the end of the mission — it was a moment to protect it.
That pause allowed time to reflect, reassess priorities, and consider how the charity could return stronger and more sustainable in the long term.
Why We’re Rebuilding Now
The need for respite care has not gone away — if anything, it has increased.
Families caring for children with life-limiting conditions continue to face emotional, physical, and financial strain. Time together remains precious, and the opportunity to step away from medical environments is still vitally important.
Rebuilding Ieuan The Lion Memorial Fund is about more than restarting activity. It’s about:
- Strengthening foundations for the future
- Ensuring the charity is resilient and transparent
- Reconnecting with supporters and the wider community
- Continuing to put families at the heart of everything we do
This rebuild is deliberate, thoughtful, and focused on long-term impact.
Building Back Stronger
This blog is the first in our Building Back Stronger series, where we’ll share the charity’s journey, values, and future direction.
We want to be open about where we’ve been, honest about the challenges we’ve faced, and clear about where we’re going next.
Because rebuilding isn’t about going back — it’s about moving forward with clarity, care, and purpose.
How You Can Support the Journey
As we rebuild, support from the community is more important than ever.
You can help by:
- Following and sharing our updates
- Raising awareness of the charity’s work
- Supporting the journey through donations and engagement
Every action helps us move closer to creating precious memories for families who need them most.
