Introduction
Every charity begins with a reason. For Ieuan The Lion Memorial Fund, that reason is deeply personal.
This is the story of Ieuan — his strength, his journey, and how one family’s lived experience through long hospital stays and life-limiting illness led to the creation of a charity built around togetherness, compassion, and precious time.
A Star in the Making
Ieuan was a bright, joyful young boy with an infectious love for life. From a very young age, he was drawn to performing — singing, acting, and making people laugh came naturally to him.
If there was a stage, Ieuan would find it.
If there was a microphone, he would pick it up.
He dreamed of seeing his name in lights and had the confidence, charm, and spirit to make it possible. He had a beautiful voice, a brilliant sense of humour, and an energy that could lift any room. Dressing up, entertaining others, and dreaming big were simply part of who he was.
But Ieuan was more than a performer. He had a rare ability to connect with people — to make them feel seen, valued, and uplifted. Teachers, carers, friends, and even strangers often spoke about how special he was and how he brightened their day. He wasn’t just chasing a dream — he was sharing joy wherever he went.
A Life Cut Short
In 2007, at just 12 years old, Ieuan became suddenly and seriously ill.
Over the course of six heartbreaking months, he lost his voice, his sight, his movement, and eventually his life — without a clear diagnosis. Despite everything he endured, Ieuan showed extraordinary bravery and determination. Even in his weakest moments, there were flashes of his radiant smile and unmistakable fighting spirit.
Ieuan passed away on 3rd July 2007, aged just 13.
The loss changed everything. The grief was overwhelming, but so too was the support that surrounded the family. Friends, relatives, and even strangers came together with kindness, compassion, and strength — helping them through a loss no family should ever have to face.
During those long months, Ieuan taught everyone around him what true courage looks like. Even when he could no longer speak or see, his humour, spark, and will to live still shone through. That strength continues to guide the charity today.
A Legacy That Lives On
In 2009, Ieuan’s family made the decision to honour his courage, strength, and joy by founding Ieuan The Lion Memorial Fund.
They wanted to give something back to the Welsh community that had supported them during their darkest days. From that came a clear mission: to create special, memory-making holidays for families caring for a child or young person with a life-limiting condition.
With the support of generous donors and the wider community, the charity now offers families the chance to stay in a fully adapted holiday home at Kiln Park in Tenby. This safe, peaceful space allows families to step away from hospital visits and daily pressures, and to spend precious time together.
Every stay, every smile, and every shared moment is part of Ieuan’s legacy.
Why Ieuan The Lion Matters
Although Ieuan’s time was short, his impact is lasting.
Through every family supported and every memory created, his light continues to shine. What began as one boy’s dream to perform has become a movement rooted in compassion, care, and understanding.
Ieuan’s name may never have appeared in stage lights — but today, it shines in the hearts of families across Wales whose lives have been touched by this charity.
